Donors Unite to Open After School Program at Braddock ES

Prospera Initiatives brought together generous foundations, corporations, and individuals to raise the $35,000 in seed money needed to start a Heritage Language Literacy Club at Braddock Elementary School in Annandale.  Founding sponsors include the PNC Foundation, the O’Shaughnessey-Hurst Foundation, the Commonweal Foundation, and the Harriet Dewey McLucas Memorial Fund.

Our VP of Program Development, Stephanie Fillman, trained program staff, ordered books, and provided all the technical details needed to ensure the program’s success.  In September 2008 twenty-two third graders and ten tutors from the fifth and eighth grades attended their first Club session. “Excitement is so high throughout the school.  The children are so proud of learning to read and write in Spanish.  Students stop me in the hallway all the time and ask about joining the program.”, remarked Claudia Trace, the program’s Teacher Leader and a native of Chile who, like many of her students, came to America as a young child and understands the challenges they face.

What’s next?  Thanks to a generous grant from the Commonweal Foundation, plans are underway to add one more grade level in January, which will serve an additional twenty readers and ten tutors.  But, our work is not done.  We must now work to sustain this effort and make the program available to the many students who are waiting to join the program.
