Heritage Language Literacy Club:

Weekly After-School Literacy Classes

Spanish-speaking students attend literacy classes after school. Each classroom is staffed by a bilingual teacher leader and five to ten young adult tutors. Elementary-aged readers are placed with a trained tutor and remain with the same tutor throughout the year; they read and write together, and enjoy music, drama, poetry, and games. At the end of every class, the tutors help readers choose a book to take home and read with their families, thus encouraging literacy in the home.
